Digital craftsmanship: wallpaper according to Heimtextil 2026
At Heimtextil 2026 digital craftsmanship redefines wallpaper, between artificial intelligence, the work of the hand and new Italian collections.

Digital craftsmanship has become, in the first months of 2026, the theme around which the vocabulary of contemporary wallpaper has recomposed itself. Not a passing fashion, but a cultural stance: the one that the Heimtextil fair in Frankfurt, held from 13 to 16 January 2026 with 3,000 exhibitors from 66 countries, chose as the guiding thread of its edition, dedicated to the theme “Craft is a verb”.
Craft is a verb: digital craftsmanship according to Heimtextil
The event was opened by the installation “Among-all” by Patricia Urquiola, discussed in a public conversation with Rosa Bertoli, global creative director of Wallpaper* magazine, centred on artificial intelligence, innovative materials and future-oriented design for domestic interiors. At the centre of the installation, a silvery, abstract, zoomorphic creature made of Ohoskin, an Italian textile innovation obtained from orange peel waste: an updated reinterpretation of a digital object the designer had first presented at Heimtextil in 2025. “I don’t believe in purity”, Urquiola said, explaining how her work proposes “a new dialogue of woven ideas” between craft and industry.
The creative platform Alcova, a point of reference during Milan Design Week, brought to the fair an even more explicit reading of the theme, presenting “Craft is a Verb” as a demonstration of the relationship between manual craft and artificial intelligence: an installation conceived as a catalogue of samples gathered from across the event, grouped into strands such as Sensing Nature, Media, The Uncanny Valley and A Playful Touch. The message that emerges is clear: technology does not replace the hand, it amplifies its gesture, restoring design dignity to imperfection, to irregular texture, to the mark that recounts a process instead of hiding it.
The Italian collections and the new matter of the wall
Among the Italian exhibitors, Cristiana Masi presented at its Heimtextil stand the 2026 collections Momi, devoted to a fairy-tale imagery for children, Metamorphosis, centred on material and transformative research, Agorà, a contemporary rereading of classical design, Jaipur, an evocation of suspended and contemplative atmospheres, and Pigmenta, an essential synthesis of colour and matter. In the notes issued by the company it is observed how woven surfaces, intentional imperfections and irregular marks today convey a more authentic and conscious idea of quality, at a time when sensitivity towards sustainability is visibly shifting perspective.
What this edition of Heimtextil conveys, then, is not so much a catalogue of surfaces as a philosophy of making. Wallpaper, in this reading, ceases to be a simple decorative backdrop and becomes an account of process: digital printing does not erase the artisanal matrix, it relaunches it, making it possible to reproduce faithfully the grain of a brushstroke, the irregular weave of a textile, the voice of a manual process that would otherwise remain unrepeatable on a large scale. It is a significant reversal of perspective for the whole contract and high-end hospitality sector, where the demand for custom surfaces, recognisable and able to convey a precise identity, grows season after season, and where the boundary between authored design and serial production is becoming ever thinner.
For a home or a formal interior conceived with care, this convergence between artificial intelligence and manual knowledge is not a paradox but an enrichment of the language available to those who design interiors. In the background remains a broader question that Urquiola herself put to the Frankfurt audience: whether the wall of tomorrow will still recount a hand, or only its echo.
