It is a technical detail that recounts a cultural change: the bathroom, the last outpost of the house still tied to “service” materials, enters fully into the language of wall decoration, with motifs, colours and weaves identical to those reserved until now for living rooms and bedrooms.

A design system, not a simple accessory

The collection itself is presented as a design system conceived to move coherently between residential, contract and hospitality settings, going beyond the logic of the single isolated decor. The graphics are organised into three thematic moodboards: one inspired by Brazilian modernism, with dusty palettes and deep greens; one recalling the tones of the desert, from sand to clay and on to burgundy; a third devoted to an idea of light architecture, between warm metals and organic surfaces. Alongside this framework are collaborations with studios such as Studiopepe and Zanellato/Bortotto and with the designers Ludovica Serafini and Roberto Palomba, who have enriched the Essential Wallpaper collection with new relief subjects.

This is not an isolated episode. The technical research that makes it possible to dress a wall in contact with water is accompanied, in the same catalogue, by work on natural materials, from hand-woven plant fibres to organic bio-vinyls with a fabric effect, both conceived to regulate humidity and to reduce the environmental footprint of the finished product. It is confirmation that innovation in wallpaper today no longer comes from the design alone, but from the ability of the surface to behave, chemically and physically, differently from the past. The choice of the names that accompany these collections, among design studios and designers already established in other fields of furnishing, also signals how far the sector now considers wallpaper not a simple decorative accessory, but a chapter in its own right of the interiors project.

The luxury of the whole room

What these developments suggest, beyond the technical fact, is a redefinition of the hierarchy of domestic rooms. While the living room has always enjoyed a complete decorative treatment, the bathroom and the spa area are often still conceived for function rather than for atmosphere. The possibility of extending the same decorative grammar to every wall, including the one most exposed to water, brings the bathroom back inside the overall design of the house, with a material coherence that the high-end hospitality sector observes with particular attention, since it is there that the sensory experience of the guest is measured even in the most private spaces.

In the end a question of method remains, rather than one of style: how far contemporary luxury consists not in adding ornament, but in allowing ornament to reach, without compromise, even those places that until now had been excluded from it.
