Metallic wallpaper: the return of the discreet glimmer

Metallic wallpaper is again taking a prominent place in the language of contemporary interior design, bringing to walls glimmers of gold, bronze and silver able to turn natural light into a living element of the space. It is not entirely new: the foil finish has long belonged to the repertoire of wall decoration, but in the season we are living through it is being chosen with greater awareness, as an instrument of discreet elegance rather than of pure scenic effect.

The return of metallic wallpaper in formal homes

International trade surveys confirm this clearly. In the 2025 survey of trends compiled by Homes and Gardens magazine, the interior designers interviewed observe that metallic finishes have never really left the wallpaper repertoire, acting as an element able to give depth to an otherwise two-dimensional design, and they expect this brilliance to keep appearing on geometric patterns, retro motifs and papers with a vintage feel.

The same sources report that gold, bronze and silver wallpapers are used as scenic backdrops above all in dining rooms and formal bathrooms, where a measured luminosity conveys an idea of luxury without slipping into excess. Metal on the wall is an aesthetic of the threshold: it takes little for a backdrop to turn into a presence.

In the most refined interior design practices too the reading converges in the same direction. Paolo Moschino, among the most authoritative voices in British interior design, places metallic finishes in a family of surfaces, together with grasscloth, linen fabrics and textural relief, that give depth and tactility without weighing a room down, describing them as the expression of a quiet luxury, able to catch the light subtly and to change tone over the course of the day.

The context in which this rereading of metal takes shape is a taste for controlled opulence that also emerged at Maison et Objet, the Paris fair that marks out international trends in living twice a year. In his analysis of the palettes in favour, the design director of the British label C.P. Hart observed how deep shades such as burgundy pair ideally with warm metallic finishes, marble, natural wood and dark accents, in a combination that openly declares its decorative ambition.

The latest edition of the fair, held in January at Paris Nord Villepinte and bringing together high-end brands and emerging projects across furnishing, décor and lifestyle, confirmed that the themes of precious material and reflected light remain central to the story of contemporary living.

A light that needs no words

What sets the current season apart from earlier returns of metal to the wall is measure. It is no longer wallpaper as a statement at high volume, but as a tonal score: an accent that accompanies panelling, velvets and matt surfaces, giving rooms a shifting quality that changes with the hours. In a formal home or in the suite of a hotel of standing, this quality becomes narrative: the wall does not merely close the space, it modulates it.

The limits of this climate remain to be seen: how long the attraction to a controlled glimmer will last, and how far it will instead give way, as has happened before, to a new cycle of matt surfaces and raw material. For now, metallic wallpaper remains one of the most eloquent means of telling an idea of luxury that has no need to raise its voice.
