Sand casting wallpaper: sculpture on the wall

There is a technique born in play, on a beach in East Hampton, that today is returning to the walls of the most discerning houses. Sand casting wallpaper, which translates into a decorative surface the sculptural method invented by Costantino Nivola, is one of the most interesting directions to have emerged this season for anyone who looks at wall coverings as a form of applied art rather than as a simple backdrop.

From the sand of Orani to that of New York

Nivola, born at Orani in the province of Nuoro, crossed almost seven thousand kilometres of personal history before reaching the United States by way of Paris, where he came into contact with Le Corbusier, the figure who introduced him to the international circuits of architecture and shaped his search for a language of his own. It was in 1948, however, after buying a house at East Hampton that also became his studio, that sand casting was born:the technique of pouring cement onto modelled sand, discovered while playing with his children at the water's edge. The American magazine Look, in June 1951, called him “The Sandman”, able to make sculptures by the sea in a matter of minutes, with nothing but plaster and imagination.

The strength of this procedure lay not only in its speed but in the quality of the result: the sand was not a simple mould, it was an active element that gave the surface an organic depth, unpredictable, impossible to obtain with traditional sculpture in stone or bronze.

The material grammar of sand casting wallpaper

It is precisely this quality, the surface “sculpted by time”, that the wallcovering sector has chosen to reinterpret. Among the proposals emerging in the 2026 landscape, the Tramae Collection by Glamora makes the tribute explicit, developing through four motifs, Ricami, Rilievi, Tracce and Veli, a three-dimensional language that recalls the sandy surfaces sculpted by time dear to Nivola, conveying the authentic appeal of handwork in a contemporary key. This is not a decorative quotation for its own sake, but a genuine technical transfer: the relief, the intended irregularity, the texture that catches the light differently at every hour of the day, are qualities that in Nivola's sculpture arose from controlled chance and that wallcovering now offers again through materials and finishes made to last.

The phenomenon belongs to a moment in which materiality, apparent handwork and the mark that tells of a process are among the criteria by which contemporary wallpaper is judged and chosen, especially by those designing rooms intended to last, from private interiors to large hospitality projects.

A surface that tells of a method

What makes sand casting wallpaper a case worth noting is not only the artistic origin of the reference, but its cultural coherence. Nivola remains one of the most international Sardinian figures of the twentieth century, able to converse as an equal with modern American architecture, as the large relief made for the Olivetti showroom on Fifth Avenue shows. To bring that method, that relationship between chance and control, between gesture and material, onto the surface of a wall means restoring narrative dignity to a covering that too often is read only in decorative terms.

The surface does not imitate sculpture: it keeps its method, translating into permanent texture a gesture that was, at its origin, as ephemeral as the sand itself.

For those designing fine interiors, this direction suggests a more demanding reading of the wall: not a neutral backdrop, but a surface that carries with it a history, a method, a verifiable origin. It is a form of luxury less immediate than that of colour or motif, but probably more lasting, because it is founded on the culture of making before the visual effect.
