Conche Carsiche

I call this Conche Carsiche wallpaper because it comes from a wall of karst limestone, the rock that water slowly hollows over centuries until it is strewn all over with spoon-shaped hollows: small concave basins, wide as a cupped palm, each with a rounded floor and a slightly raised, undercut rim. The hollows overlap relentlessly, some wide and shallow, others narrow and deeply cut, all turned in the same direction, as though a single slow current had shaped them one after another until every centimetre of the surface was covered.

It is the style of karst limestone, read here as a true macro photograph of carved stone: the crystalline grain, the tiny pores, the fine calcite veins that cross one hollow and carry on into the next are all visible, in a diffused light that gathers pale inside each cavity and turns grey-brown in the shadow beneath each rim. The colour stays that of the rock itself — bone white, warm cream, ash grey, taupe, with veins of ochre and rust where iron has stained the stone — without a single drawn outline, only true relief.
