The story
In my Trono di Nubi wallpaper I fix the instant in which the founding master settles into full lotus position on the low lacquered throne, his monastic robe gathered in wide soft folds, one hand raised in the gesture of teaching, while a luminous halo lights up behind his shoulders.
I belong to the painting tradition of karma gadri, the school that first draws a sure outline and then lays transparent mineral glazes within it: gnarled pines bend towards the centre with their tufts of needles, tall cranes walk and fly among the branches, banks of cloud curl around the whole group. The composition is strictly symmetrical, the master enlarged at the centre, pines and cranes mirrored in balance on either side, on a light ground that breathes without crowding.
The palette is that of the old minerals: pale turquoise and malachite green for pines and rocks, chalk white and blue-grey for the clouds, ochre and muted cinnabar for throne and robe, with measured touches of gold along hems and halos. Up close one discovers the fine outline of every feather barb, every tuft of needles, every curled edge of cloud.
