The story
In the Popolo di Arenaria wallpaper I bring to the wall the suspended horizon of Goblin Valley, where wind and water have written a whole people of mushroom forms on the rock. I belong to the style of canyons and badlands, that slow and patient writing of erosion which carves stone into organic, unpredictable shapes, yet ordered by an ancient logic.
The design shows the desert basin dotted, from end to end, with squat hoodoos: bulbous caps in rust and burnt earth resting on paler stems of ochre and dusty grey, gathered in colonies that thicken in the foreground and thin out, ever smaller and more veiled, towards a distant line of mesas. At the foot of each formation a lavender shadow stretches, while the ground ripples in a fine weave of cracked mud, scattered with small stones.
To live every day beside this landscape is to inhabit geological time, to feel part of a patience in no hurry to be complete. It is a silent reminder: what endures is not what opposes the wind, but what lets itself be shaped by it without losing its own form.
