Merletto d’Arenaria

I am born as a window that opens not onto the sky but onto light itself: the Merletto d’Arenaria wallpaper tells of a single pointed-arch panel, its tip rising in a gentle keel, filled to the edge by a jali lattice of eight-pointed stars and elongated hexagons that interlace into one continuous screen of stone.

I was born of the ancient gesture of the chisel, the one that does not draw but takes away: every piercing is a shadowed void, every spared rib carries a thread of light along its chamfered edge. Around me runs a calmer frame, a warp of trefoil arches and rosettes that traces the outline of the arch and of its base, offering the eye a rest before it enters the geometric density of the heart.

My skin is that of aged sandstone: warm ochre, honey beige, turning umber and terracotta in the deepest cuts, while pale stone lights the reliefs and a pink-grey veil settles in the shadow of the piercings. Close up you find the marks of the burin, small chips, the discreet veining of the stone: traces of a time that never really stopped.
