Indaco di Edo

And so, on the wall, the Indaco di Edo wallpaper comes into being: a fine chequerboard of alternating squares, deep indigo and warm ivory, following one another without a break, edge to edge, in rows and columns strictly reversed. It is the language of Japanese komon, the art of the katagami stencil brought to its highest precision: every margin is drawn with absolute rigour, every colour is flat, without gradation, and a thin thread of anthracite grey marks where one square meets the next, like a discreet suture.

From a distance the design reads as a clear rhythm of blocks; close up it reveals a minute, almost textile weave, parallel striations that catch the light and give back the memory of cloth, of the loom, of the weaving hand. It is this double gaze — the geometric order and the matter that vibrates beneath it — that makes ichimatsu a motif at once ancient and always current: its endless repetition, with no visible beginning or end, speaks of continuity, of a balance between opposites that hold one another up instead of standing against one another.
