The story
I sign my Girandola Veneziana wallpaper the way one signs an old floor, by hand, grain after grain. It belongs to fine-grained Venetian terrazzo, the technique the masters of the lagoon perfected by binding chips of marble and stone into a single mirror-polished surface, and I bring it upright, onto the wall, as a medallion to be contemplated rather than walked over.
At the centre stands a radiating rose: segments widening from a small dense core like the spokes of a wheel, each filled with fine chips of marble and stone, ground flush until they become a single continuous plane. A geometric border of dark chips, a key motif running round the perimeter, separates the medallion from the field of plain terrazzo around it, calm and even.
In the warmth of the warm grey ground, among ivory, cream and taupe reflections, and the darker veins that draw the spokes, I find again the same patience as floors that have seen centuries of footsteps: a material that does not shout but endures, and consoles for exactly that reason.
In every room where it lives — a house, a study, a hotel lobby — the Girandola Veneziana wallpaper asks for a single free wall, where natural light can settle unhindered and give back, grain after grain, the depth of the design.
