The story
I am surface before I am image: in the Grana di Sascab wallpaper I find again chukum lime spread with the trowel, still alive with the gesture that compacted it, an amber-brown ground crossed by minute fragments of sascab that resurface like thoughts not entirely put to rest.
I do not tell a scene, I give back a material: where the trowel slowed, the paste closed into smooth caramel and ochre plates; where it passed faster, the limestone aggregate stayed exposed, pale and porous, in small lumps that mark the rhythm of manual work. It is a surface without repeat, a continuous field that varies in density as the attention of someone working with their hands varies.
I conceive this Grana di Sascab wallpaper for the study, for the office, for any place where the natural light is clear and steady and the mind asks for order without coldness: chukum does not shout, it accompanies. It is a discreet presence that supports concentration, like a wall that has already passed through time and is in no hurry to show it.
Close up the surface reveals its fine grain, the striations left by the direction of the hand, the small voids where a grain has come away, the shifts in sheen where the pressure changed.
