Pulviscolo Veneziano

It comes from an ancient gesture, that of the Venetian masters who sowed marble and glass over a field of fresh binder: the Pulviscolo Veneziano wallpaper gathers that gesture and fixes it in a single continuous surface. It belongs to fine-seeded Venetian terrazzo, a technique that entrusts the distribution of every chip to chance — and to the hand that guides it.

The design shows a dense field of irregular fragments: chips of Carrara marble, veined grey marbles, stones in ochre and terracotta, and small glasses in sea green, amber and smoked topaz, each turned at random and wedged against its neighbour, with no medallions and no bands, with no direction to follow. The ivory and pale grey binder takes them all in with the same density, from one corner to the other, like a floor polished to a mirror by time and by the hand of man.

To come closer is to find the clean cut of the glass against the softer veining of the stone, the tiny air pores, the fine marks of grinding: details that tell of a real material, not an illusion.
