The story
The Squadrone di Polvere wallpaper opens onto the light of one of the most intense landscapes in Italian painting: a column of light cavalry advancing in file along a dusty road, cutting diagonally across open country. Short jackets, forage caps pulled down, sabres at the hip and the odd tilted lance: each rider is built, following the lesson of the Macchiaioli, as a patch of tone rather than a drawn outline. The file enters from one side of the composition and thins towards a low horizon, among cypresses and scrub, while the pale sky and the sunlit road carry the weight of the moving mass.
I look at this image and find in it time passing in single file, the dull sound of hooves, the dust that rises and settles: a silent order crossing the land without stopping. It is discipline turned landscape, the human gesture becoming part of the Tuscan light, between burnt earth and ochre, bottle green and indigo, bay and chestnut horses against a silver-grey sky, with small accents of vermilion at the collars and the pennants.
