Artiglio d’Orchidea

I look closely, as though through a naturalist's lens, at the Artiglio d’Orchidea wallpaper, and there I find the secret geometry of a perfect deception. It belongs to the great family of insects, that part of nature able to turn itself into a flower in order to survive, and here it shows itself without modesty: the foreleg of an orchid mantis, caught in tight profile, from the slender coxa that anchors the limb to the curved raptorial claw, by way of a femur that opens into two wide overlapping lobes, shaped like curved petals. An articulated knee marks the hinge between the femur and the thinner tibia, edged with fine serration, before the blade tapers to its point.

The light passing through the cuticle tells of the matter more than any applied colour could: translucent pink that turns to bright pink along the veins, milk white at the edges of the lobes, a faint amber where the tissue grows thinner, grey-pink shadow gathered beneath the knee. It is a portrait at once botanical and predatory, poised between beauty and ambush, rendered with the precision of nature photography.

From a distance, the curved gesture occupies the wall as a single sign; close up, every vein and every small seta reveals its own drawing. In this shift of scale I recognise the work we love: the same care with which, in the WallZad workshop, every Artiglio d’Orchidea wallpaper is printed and finished by hand, so that the small wonder is never lost in the large surface.
