Battuto di Laguna

I call this surface Battuto di Laguna wallpaper: it returns the ancient art of the Venetian floor, fine-grained Venetian terrazzo in its most authentic form.

The design shows a Venetian battuto made of crushed cocciopesto — irregular fragments of brick red and burnt terracotta — mixed with angular chips of white Carrara, grey bardiglio and ochre limestone. Each piece has been beaten and rolled flush, set into a compact matrix of lime and marble dust, with no visible joints and no repeating grid: a continuous, dense distribution that runs from the smallest chips to the largest fragments across the whole surface, with neither direction nor centre.

In this floor raised onto a wall I read the slow time of the lagoon craftsman, the patience of one who beats and finishes until every fracture becomes part of a larger design. It is matter that does not pretend, that carries the marks of its own making: the fine cracks of aged lime, the contrast between gloss and matt, the texture worked by hand.
