Memoria di Tadelakt

And so, under my hands, the Memoria di Tadelakt wallpaper comes into being: a surface of burnt lime plaster, polished with black soap, that carries the marks of time like an old skin. It is tadelakt polished with black soap, the Moroccan technique of trowel and polishing stone, told here at its truest age: not the perfect slab freshly laid, but the one that has lived, that has gone matt in patches and let the overlaid halos of old water seepage surface like lunar cycles.

I look at the composition and find it asymmetrical, alive: a denser core of circles and dull patches gathers just off centre, while the rest of the wall thins towards a calmer surface, more evenly buttery in its graphite sheen. The deep black slips into smoke taupe and warm umber where the soap has worn away, and in the oldest circles a green-grey undertone gathers, almost a mineral memory. Close up you find the microscopic craquelure of the lime skin, the soft halo that accompanies every mark, the direction of the polishing that catches the light differently from one area to another.
