The story
The Calice di Loto wallpaper comes from a precise botanical gesture: the flower of Nelumbo nucifera, its pointed tepals opening in a rosette around the central cup, set beside large round leaves crossed by fine veins radiating from the stalk. It is a design belonging to Flora, the family of plant subjects WallZad has always read as a pretext for telling of the quiet of nature observed close up.
Every flower and every leaf appears in isolation, scattered discreetly on an ivory ground, so that the eye never finds a centre but breathes in a wide, almost empty space, where the powder pink of the petals, the sage green of the leaves and the petrol green of the cups emerge as pauses of colour. It is not a crowded garden: it is a botanical thought reduced to essentials, where every outline is clean and every striation tells of the living structure of the plant.
I wanted this design to stay suspended between rigour and lightness, faithful to the discipline of Flora yet able to suit any wall, from the private house to a hotel lobby, without ever imposing itself. This is where the work of WallZad comes in: in the choice of paper, in the fidelity of the colours, in the texture that makes every tepal and every vein perceptible to the touch as well as to the eye. To hang the Calice di Loto wallpaper is to let a single wall tell a story of water, light and silence, with no need of anything else.
