Cifra Regale

I am born as Cifra Regale wallpaper from a single gesture of nature: a leaf of Agave victoriae-reginae, thick and regal, which macro light turns into a plant monument. Across its bottle-green blade, almost black in the shadows, run chalky lines pressed in by the neighbouring buds: white, irregular marks, at times as fine as a nib, at times broader and dusty, which look like an ancient writing left on the plant by time itself.

I did not want to tell of a garden but of a single fragment brought to its greatest intensity: the dark horny tip that closes the leaf like a seal, the faceted faces that catch a pale glaucous reflection, the minute weave of the waxy cuticle that reveals, at close range, fine cracks in the white pigment. It is an involuntary calligraphy, and yet an ordered one, which the plant writes on itself in order to protect itself and grow: a reminder that the most authentic elegance is always born of a necessity.
