Cucitura Ardente

In the design I have called Cucitura Ardente wallpaper I recognise a single slab of granite told in two movements. On one side a dense weave of fine-point bush-hammering, lines almost woven from small reliefs; on the other a rougher, crystalline field, flame-worked, where the thermal faces open wide and splintered. The boundary between the two finishes cuts the surface with a clean, irregular diagonal, shifting the focus of the composition slightly off centre while the flamed field spreads to the margins, without interruption.

It is the same style that Italian stonework has cultivated for centuries, flamed granite, brought here into its furthest dialogue with fine bush-hammering: two techniques, one material, a single voice. Through the dark grain — anthracite, slate, a colder steel where the flame strikes, a warmer graphite where the points crowd together — run fine veins and glints of quartz and mica that join without confusing.

In our paper I wanted to render this tension without betraying it: the fidelity of the real surface, the diffuse light that reveals every relief, the scale that reads from a distance and multiplies into detail close up. It is a material that does not simulate stone but brings it into the home, into an office, into a hotel lobby, staying faithful to every one of its flaws. Cucitura Ardente wallpaper too, like the slab it comes from, is never twice the same.
