Duna di Calce

I sign this Duna di Calce wallpaper as one signs a gesture of the hand that still holds warmth: a layer of lime mortar, modelled in continuous bas-relief, grows on a smooth marmorino ground until it gathers into a single relief, a soft crest, slightly off centre, which then dissolves back into the flat surface. It is the style of lime marmorino, at once ancient and alive, which here does not decorate: it builds, layer upon layer, a mineral landscape.

I look at the slab and see what the craftsman's hand has left: the passes of the trowel turning around the summit, the fine shrinkage cracks that follow the contour of the relief, the grains of unslaked lime and marble dust held in the skin of the plaster.
