Squame di Verderame

I call this metal skin the Squame di Verderame wallpaper, and I wanted it faithful, today, to the true breath of ageing copper. It belongs to the style of verdigris copper, copper oxidised to verdigris: a surface that tells of time through colour, not through drawing.

The subject is concrete and legible: rectangular copper tiles, each twice as wide as it is high, laid in staggered courses like an old brick-bond facing. The long edges fold upward into fine seams, the short sides close in clean folds that hold the light course after course, without gaps, without pauses, in a continuous skin covering the whole wall.

Each scale lives its own season of oxidation: rose-gold on the most exposed crests, chocolate brown in the deep shadows, broad patches of blue-green verdigris advancing like an uneven mineral bloom. Close up you find the hammered grain of the metal, the marks of the tools, the faint traces of rivets along the seams: details that reward the attentive eye without ever betraying the strength of the whole seen from afar.

In this wallpaper I recognise a tribute to endurance: copper does not hide when it changes, it shows itself, and it is in that changing that it finds its truest beauty.
