Farfalla di Bardiglio

I open the Farfalla di Bardiglio wallpaper the way one opens a book of stone: two slabs cut from the same block and mirrored, the central seam holding them together like a held breath.

It belongs to the family of polished veined marble, opened like a book by the bookmatch technique: two twin cuts from the same block, turned and set side by side, so that the veining draws, at the point where they meet, a symmetrical figure that spreads like a wing. That is exactly what the design shows: two tall panels, the vein running diagonally down from the outer corners and converging on the vertical joint, where the lines interlace into a denser, more branching motif, the open wings of a butterfly carved in stone. Towards the edges the design loosens into calmer fields, before thickening again at the centre.

The ground is a warm ivory-greige, crossed by smoke-grey and anthracite veins, lit by fine ochre filaments and by bronze-coloured veins that warm the surface. Close up the stone reveals hairline cracks, the crystalline glitter of the limestone, bands of colour parallel to the main veins, shifts in sheen that follow the natural bedding of the rock.

In writing this wallpaper I look for the balance that marble has kept for millennia: symmetry as a promise, veining as the memory of geological time.
