The story
Crivello di Kozo wallpaper comes from an ancient gesture and a contemporary technique: a sheet of fibrous washi, worked by hand, crossed by a regular lattice of small circular voids cut by water jet. I belong to the family of fibrous washi paper, that Japanese tradition which weaves kozo fibres into an irregular yet cohesive web, and it is this matter itself — Rakusui-shi — that becomes the design.
Seen from a distance I reveal a great rose of light: the holes widen at the centre of the sheet and narrow towards the margins, composing a single radial motif that breathes across the surface. Close up, instead, the design breaks into a denser web of small openings, each one with a slightly irregular edge where the jet of water parted the fibres without cutting them, letting minute filaments and knots of pulp surface in the warm shade of ivory and straw.
I represent neither a landscape nor a figure: I am matter itself, made visible and brought to wall scale. Every void is a small window that lets air and light through, and together they compose a surface that always seems in movement, never the same from one corner of the room to the other.
