The story
The Conche di Carso wallpaper is born of a very slow gesture: that of water which, drop after drop, dissolves stone and turns it into memory. It belongs to karst limestone, the rock that time dissolves from below, opening in the flat surface round and oval cups of different sizes, each rimmed by a lip that curves inwards and undercuts itself, until it leaves a clean thread of shadow where the rock has been eaten away by the water.
The plane that holds them stays real stone: a fine bone and taupe grain, barely perceptible sedimentation striations, while inside each basin the wall drops softly towards a darker floor, tinted with ochre where the sun grazes it, with anthracite where the shadow gathers. Larger basins cluster at the centre, smaller satellites and fine dissolution channels connect them, and wide stretches of untouched rock leave the design room to breathe.
I have not drawn a motif: I have let the stone tell its own story, with its rust veins following old lines of water and its diffused light revealing every pore, every small erosion. In this, for me, lies the most honest form of beauty: the kind time signs without meaning to. It is this fidelity to the material that WallZad keeps in every Conche di Carso wallpaper, reproduced with a care that respects the rock as though it were still alive.
