Mulinello di Pietra

It comes from a rock that remembers time: the Mulinello di Pietra wallpaper tells of granite carved by glacial meltwater, that style which the ancient ages wrote directly into the stone, with no need of other ornament. In the design I recognise the giants’ kettles, those circular hollows scoured into the bedrock by boulders turning under the weight of the thaw water: two great dark mouths at the centre, others smaller that accompany them like satellites, each incised with grooves that spiral from the rim down to the throat, like vortices frozen at the very moment of their movement.

The pale grey of the rock darkens inside each cavity, down to graphite and slate, while veins of quartz and traces of mineral rust follow the old lines of the water. It is a landscape in miniature, where time has not passed but stayed, legible in the grain of the granite, in the glints of feldspar and mica, in the surfaces smoothed by the constant friction of stone on stone.
