Scacco di Rovere

I call this Scacco di Rovere wallpaper a designer floor moved to the vertical, where the wood speaks of itself with no pretence of imitation. It belongs to the brushed oak style, the material here taking the form of a mosaic: small oak strips laid in square modules, each a compact bundle of parallel grain, and every module turned ninety degrees from its neighbour. What comes of it is a tight chequerboard rhythm, an almost basket-like weave that refuses the monotony of the continuous plank.

From a distance you read the large design, the light-dark play between tones of pale honey and toasted caramel, heightened by the way the light meets the brushing from opposite directions.
