Fasciame Ramato

With the Fasciame Ramato wallpaper I sign a cladding that tells of time through metal: long copper strakes laid in overlapping courses, each joint marked by a regular row of dome-headed rivets and by larger nails, driven flush along the seam. It is not an isolated panel but a continuous, horizontal surface, running from one edge to the other like the real planking of a ship or an old roof.

It is the verdigris style, the natural oxidation of copper, which I show here at every age: the warm pink and burnt orange of freshly exposed metal, the mottled bronze, the chocolate brown of the oxide, through to broad blue-green fields, malachite streaks and the mineral bloom that gathers along the seams, where the damp lingered longest.

Close up, the rivets show hammered faces and slight dents, the nails carry tool marks, the edges of the strakes ripple faintly. It is a living surface, one that breathed air and rain before it became a wall.
