Fascio Infranto

In the Fascio Infranto wallpaper I have fixed the instant in which a bundle of tall, slender reeds breaks under a volley of blows: its cone shape, narrow at the base and tapering upwards, shatters into splinters and lines that scatter across the field, some still upright at their original angle, others flung sideways, others reduced to short fragments and stray marks.

The language is that of Gutai, the Japanese movement that made physical gesture, the body acting on matter, its only grammar. Here the mark is raw: loaded brushstrokes, torn edges, scraped and dragged surfaces, thin ink-like runs falling from the points of impact. The ground of raw linen and unrefined ochre takes strips of rust red and burnt earth where the blow lands hardest, and flashes of bone white where the surface is stripped to the quick.

In this design I see the force that breaks order and, in breaking it, reveals something truer: the tension between what holds and what gives way is the same that runs through any genuine story. It is not destruction for its own sake, but energy taking form, suspended in the moment after the blow.
