The story
The Flauto di Mithila wallpaper opens the wall onto a scene painted in the Madhubani tradition, the old painting of the Indian region of Mithila, where every surface becomes narrative and devotion.
At the centre, frontal and still in a slight contrapposto, a divine figure raises a long flute to painted lips: the body elongates within a continuous black outline, following the linear grammar of this school. On either side, two pairs of full-bellied cows with curved horns turn towards the figure, their necks hung with garlands; above, slender trees with fan-shaped crowns interlace their branches and close the composition in mirror symmetry. The whole ground — around the figure, the cows and the trees — is filled with an unbroken fabric of marks: cross-hatching, dotted borders, lotus rosettes, fish, peacocks, tendrils, so that the whole reads as a single painted hanging, with the flute player as its quiet centre.
The colour follows the traditional pigments: saffron and ochre grounds, indigo for the deity's skin and the shaded flanks of the cows, vermilion for borders and jewellery, lamp black for every outline, leaf green dotting the branches.
