The story
I am the Kabuto d’Indaco wallpaper, born of an ancient painting tradition that here comes back to life on a wall: Ukiyo-e, the Japanese school of the floating world, with its sure calligraphic line and its fields of flat colour in place of shadow.
I depict a lone warrior in lacquered armour, the broad guards firm at his shoulders and the horned kabuto helmet, bent low to the left as he raises a curved blade against a colossal sea monster: its serpentine coils, its claws and its gaping jaws arch in towers above him, in a taut diagonal that occupies the upper register of the picture. Around them, stylised waves and bands of cloud let the scene breathe.
The palette digs into the indigo and Prussian blue of the scales, the lacquer black and the gold of the armour, the vermilion of the cords, of the eyes and of the jaws of the beast: colours that, close up, reveal the plates incised one by one, the overlapping scales, the spray thrown from the edge of the blade, the fine knots that bind the cuirass.
In this suspended clash between man and immensity I recognise a question as old as art itself: what is the measure of courage before what overwhelms us? It is this unresolved tension that I entrust to the wall. WallZad renders it as a museum photograph of the original painting, brushstroke and pigment still visible on the surface: the Kabuto d’Indaco wallpaper does not decorate a room, it inhabits it with the same pride as the warrior it portrays.
