The story
In the Flutti di Calcare wallpaper I recognise the very slow gesture of water dissolving stone: I belong to the genre of wave-smoothed marble, a surface that carries no chisel marks but the memory of a flow that lasted centuries.
What I see is a marble with dissolution flutes: soft, rounded grooves run diagonally, cutting obliquely across the horizontal sedimentary bands of the stone. The flutes vary in width and depth as they cross each layer, and generate a large-scale current that runs over the whole surface from one corner to the other, without a break and without gaps. The colour is that of warm ivory and honeyed calcite, interrupted by deeper veins of amber, ochre and umber where the dissolution has uncovered older mineral layers, and by grey-white streaks where the rock is more recently exposed. Close up, every groove reveals a crystalline dust, fine parallel striations left by the passing water, small steps where one flute meets another.
In this stone I read patience: nothing here is sudden, everything was carved drop by drop. It is this slowness that WallZad renders with the same care, composing the Flutti di Calcare wallpaper as a single continuous image, without seams or repeats, made to fill a large free wall and let it breathe like living stone.
