Grana Ardente

So the Grana Ardente wallpaper comes into being, under the steady light of a photographic studio: a slab of porphyritic granite shot as one photographs a work in a museum, frontal, with no shadows to deceive the eye. It is flamed granite, the style the flame leaves on stone after passing over it: the surface is not polished but matt, slightly porous, incised by microfractures that the heat drew between the grains of quartz, mica and feldspar.

On this taupe and graphite ground, crossed by traces of rust and ochre, the real protagonists emerge: large feldspar phenocrysts, tabular and irregular, scattered asymmetrically, sparser at the edges and gathered into a dense core at the centre, where the eye settles first. Some are ivory, others honey-coloured or salmon pink, a few flecked with dark biotite: small mineral monuments within the finer matrix.

I look at this stone and find in it a slow geology made visible, time compressed into a few centimetres of rock. It is a material that pretends nothing: it shows its cracks, its grain, its weight. In the texture of the Grana Ardente wallpaper I wanted to keep this honesty, given back at wall scale so that it can be lived with, not only observed. It is a gesture of measure, consistent with WallZad's craft work: fidelity to the real material as the highest form of elegance, suited to any room that can value the silence of stone.
