Ottone Vissuto

The Ottone Vissuto wallpaper comes from a gesture made by time rather than by the hand: a metal surface that has passed through years of light and friction before coming to rest, here, in a single continuous image.

I belong to the style of burnished brass, and I tell of a metal worn rather than polished: an unbroken field of hammered facets and rubbed planes, dominated by one great fold that crosses the picture on the bias, its crest polished to a warm gold while the lower facets around it hold a brown-green oxide gathered in the creases. Around this main gesture lesser facets multiply, dents, rubbed areas: each with its own thread of light and its own shadow, so that the eye recognises the master fold from afar and, coming closer, finds a dense weave of tool marks, small blisters, haloes of polishing, fine scratches.

I do not describe an ornament but a biography in matter: the beauty that remains after use, the light that settles where the metal gave way most. It is the memory of the gesture, rendered as art photography, with diffuse light that reveals every relief without betraying it.
