Meandro Celeste

In the Meandro Celeste wallpaper I let a single stroke of water tell a whole river, without ever lifting the brush from the sheet. It is a wet-on-wet watercolour drawing, the technique here shown in its purest and most fragile form: damp pigment that settles, spreads, dries into a darker rim where the water stops.

The subject is simple and direct: a river drawn with a single blue stroke, entering one side of the sheet and leaving the other, swelling and narrowing according to the pressure of the hand that traced it. A wide horseshoe bend, small thin tributaries that break away from the main course and dry into nothing before rejoining it: nothing else occupies the paper, which stays wide and silent above and below that diagonal of blue.

Cerulean at the coolest point of the stroke, it turns ultramarine and then indigo where the colour stayed longest, making up a single family of blues with no other interference. Close up you find the blooms where the water ran back into the stroke, the tiny splashes beside the widest bend, the nap of the paper the brush only grazed.
