Ombra e Meriggio

I was born as painting before becoming the Ombra e Meriggio wallpaper, from the quick gesture of a brush that does not draw outlines but builds them with patches of light and dark. I am a village square, a cattle market opening beneath a shaded arcade: on one side the stone arches hold a blue-black veined with violet, on the other the square blazes with burnt ochre and terracotta, where broad-hatted farmers haggle over the price of oxen and sheep.

I do not seek the minute detail: I am made of broad touches, of flat strokes that add up to the brim of a hat, a hoof, the crust of plaster on an arch. From a distance I tell the rhythm of the market — the pauses of pale stone, the measured stir of the figures — close to I break down into pure matter, dense pigment catching the light as if still wet on the canvas.

Brought to a bedroom wall, I become a complicit half-light: the dark arcade accompanies sleep, the sunlit square remains a warm memory, never intrusive, which the low evening light touches without disturbing rest. I am quiet and movement at once, suspended between the shade that protects and the sun that tells of a day of old labour.
