Trillo Cromato

I sign this Trillo Cromato wallpaper the way one signs an enlarged comic strip: firm black outlines, flat fields of colour, the gesture of American Pop Art brought to the scale of an entire wall. At the centre, a pedestal basin becomes a domestic monument, flanked by pipes running vertically like comic-book columns and by a wall telephone, cherry-red body and coiled cord, suspended in perfect symmetry.

I love Pop Art for its honesty: it does not pretend, it declares. Every form here is built with fields of Ben-Day dots of varying density, modelling the curve of the basin and the cylinder of the pipes as an original printing plate would. The chrome reflections are crisp white strips, almost electric; the mustard ground vibrates beneath the regular dots, while speed lines describe a dripping tap with the light irony of American comics.

Seen from a distance, the composition reads in an instant, poster and icon at once; up close, it rewards the eye with the almost typographic rigour of its drawing. It is a portrait of the everyday raised to myth, the family bathroom turned into a shop-window scene.
