The story
I live the Paravento delle Dame wallpaper as a silent opening into the court painting of old Japan. I belong to Yamato-e, the school of painting that through the Heian centuries celebrated the refined life of the aristocracy with flat colours, sure ink outlines and a measured use of gold.
I show three court ladies, seated low, wrapped in layered robes whose hems open like crescents of cloth on the floor. Each is partly hidden by low *byōbu* screens and by diaphanous *kichō* curtains hanging from lacquered bars. Their faces follow the classical *hikime-kagihana* convention — a fine stroke for the eye, a small hook for the nose — while their hair falls straight and black to the waist.
Deep vermilion, moss green, indigo, saffron, soft lavender and chalk white make up the chromatic dress, laid over a warm ivory ground where gold appears only here and there, to lighten frames and curtain weights. The composition, deliberately asymmetrical, lets the space around the figures breathe, so that any room — home, office, hospitality space — can take in this quiet without crowding it.
In my work at WallZad I wanted every fold, every motif woven into the fabrics, every fine ink thread of the hair to stay as legible close to as the overall form is from afar: this is how a Paravento delle Dame wallpaper becomes the living memory of a suspended age rather than its imitation.
