Vano di Luce

In my Vano di Luce wallpaper I tell of a room emptied of all furniture, where only the plastered walls, the wooden floor and a casement window left open at an angle remain. It is a Hopperesque study in painting, suspended between architectural rigour and emotional silence: a broad shaft of afternoon light enters through the opening and crosses the floorboards, climbs the far wall and defines, on its own, the geometry of the room.

There is no furniture to distract the eye: the composition is asymmetrical, wall and floor remain wide, calm fields, while the diagonal light becomes the only figure in the picture. The colour tells of two temperatures that touch without mixing — the warm ochre and pale straw of the light against the slate grey and dull green of the shadow — on chalky white walls and boards the colour of burnt amber, with the window frame in a muted cream. Up close the surface reveals the dry brushstroke laid on the wall in shadow, small reliefs of impasto along the sharp edge of the light, faint pentimenti in the window jambs: the painter’s hand, not only the image.
