Portale d’Ocra

I imagined the Portale d’Ocra wallpaper as a threshold of stone and light, suspended between land and sea. It belongs to the Coast style, the coastal landscape that here becomes a Mediterranean account: the ochre limestone cliffs of the Algarve rise sheer above a transparent green sea, their vertical face pierced by tall natural arches and by sea caves collapsed in on themselves, shadowy caverns that open like secrets in the rock.

One great arch, slightly off centre, dominates the composition, flanked by lesser stacks and by hollowed ledges that trail away towards a headland veiled in haze; the horizon stays low, so that rock and sky divide a broad, silent band between them. The stone tells of time through mineral striations, salt-bleached crusts, debris scattered at the foot of the cliffs, while the raking light kindles every fissure and every porous cavity.

In this design I see the patient shape of water carving stone, the same slowness WallZad gives to every wallpaper: a single continuous surface, without repeats, made to return from afar the scale of the cliff and close to the mineral breath of the material. It is a landscape that does not fill but leaves room for the void, like the rooms that will receive it: refined, quiet spaces, where a large free wall can at last become a horizon.
