Rada d’Inchiostro

I am born as the Rada d’Inchiostro wallpaper, and my name already carries the gesture that made me: a brush loaded with sumi ink, thinned with water until it became mist, then fixed on rice paper in a few decisive strokes. I belong to the tradition of suibokuga, the monochrome ink painting of the Far East, where the void is not absence but breath, and weighs as much as every solid.

I tell of a fishing village set at the foot of a cliff, a handful of pitched roofs and thatched shelters gathered on a tongue of rock above the water. A few tiny boats dot the bay: some drawn up on the pebble beach, others far out at sea, each drawn with a few sure strokes that are enough to suggest hull, sail, oar. The crag rises on the diagonal, built from broad washes running from deep black at the base to the pale grey that dissolves into haze, while the village stays small and gathered, and around it spreads the untouched white of the paper, which stands for sky, water and mist together.

From a distance I am a single gesture, the dark mass of the rock poised against the void of the water; close to I reveal my calligraphy: the dry weave of the stone and of the pines on the crag, the wet strokes of the roofs and the windows, the quick marks of the oars on the smaller boats. In this balance between solid and void I find my truest meaning: human life, fragile and minute, drawing near with measure to the greatness of nature.
