Radici Sospese

I begin life as Radici Sospese wallpaper, and before anything else I am a gesture of observation: five or six wild orchids, portrayed as in an old herbarium plate, complete with flowering spike, ribbon-like petals, labellum, slender stem, paired lance-shaped leaves and, beneath it all, the exposed tangle of aerial roots and fleshy tubers. I belong to botanical illustration, that patient discipline uniting the rigour of scientific drawing with the grace of watercolour, and on a pale linen ground I arrange my specimens with generous breathing space, turned at different angles, without grid or frame, like loose sheets on a study table.

My washes are transparent, pooling and feathering at the petal edges over a faint pencil underdrawing, while delicate ink lines define veins and roots. The colour stays close to the ivory of the ground: blush pink and warm white for the flowers, sage and olive for leaves and stems, a single accent of dusty plum in the throats and root tips, anchoring the eye. Close inspection reveals fine root hairs, the gradual blush inside each petal, small ink-dot texture on the labellum.

In this design I recognise the patient waiting of nature growing unseen before it flowers, and the care with which the human eye has always wished to preserve its memory on paper. It is the same spirit with which, at WallZad, we choose every surface to dress: without haste, one room at a time, letting the wall become a place of contemplation.
