Ritmo di Terracotta

I drew the Ritmo di Terracotta wallpaper as a silent procession, a continuous file of round arches following one another without interruption, pier after pier, until they vanish at the edges of the design and reappear, identical, on the opposite side. It is the Arches style translated into a flat, vector language: clean profiles, even fields of colour, no shadow to draw the eye away from the purity of the form.

Every arch rises from slender piers and closes in a perfect curve, marked by a fine double line that repeats its inner contour and by a small dot that marks the keystone, like a discreet signature repeated endlessly. The palette is that of earth fired in the sun — terracotta and cream — set alight against a deep ink-blue ground, dense as a Mediterranean night.

In this regular cadence, without gaps or pauses, I wanted to give back the idea of the portico as an architecture of passage: a place that does not hold you but accompanies you. Walking beneath a sequence of arches is a gesture as old as Italian cloisters and loggias, a rhythm that reassures because it repeats, and surprises because it never truly ends. It is in this tension between order and the infinite that the design finds its quiet.
