Ritmo Primario

I call this design the Ritmo Primario wallpaper: it comes from a continuous lattice of horizontal and vertical bands, set out in an irregular rhythmic sequence with no compositional centre. It is an avowed homage to Neoplasticism, the movement that taught art to breathe through pure lines and flat surfaces, without hierarchy or vanishing point.

Looking at the surface you see an ivory ground crossed by black bars of varying width, some as thin as a pencil stroke, others thicker, which here and there open into small square fields of primary red, blue and yellow. There is no subject to recognise, no scene to tell: there is only the precision of the meeting, the exactness with which each band aligns with the next at every intersection.

I like to think that the absence of a centre is itself a form of freedom: the eye can enter from any edge and go on without pause, because the motif runs from one border to the other and closes on itself, invisible in its seam. It is an order that imposes no direction but offers countless ones, calm and rigorous at the same time.
