Sferza di Ginestra

I imagined the Sferza di Ginestra wallpaper the way one looks at a real painting, close up, letting the light of the Maremma arrive before the story does. We are in the heart of the Macchiaioli style: no outline to define the forms, only wide patches of colour that build horses, men and earth out of the same matter as the light that strikes them.

The scene is clear and concrete: two or three mounted herdsmen, whip and coiled rope at their side, drive a small herd of cattle through the low Mediterranean scrub. The beasts move bunched and somewhat scattered, heads low, tails flicking the hot air; bay and black horses move diagonally across the middle of the field, among tufts of broom and myrtle that break the dry earth. Above, a pale, still sky takes the upper part, leaving all the movement gathered in a central band, while the other side of the field breathes empty and open.

In the palette I recognise the ochre and the sienna of the Maremma, the sage green of the scrub, the white touches that light the flanks of the horses and the dark notes of hooves and horns. It is real painting, reproduced like a museum photograph, with the brushstroke still visible on the surface.
