The story
I call this surface of lime marmorino the Sgraffio Vivo wallpaper, incised with a point while the mortar was still fresh, at the moment when the material could still be crossed by the gesture. The design shows exactly that: a lattice of fine lines drawn freehand on the smoothed skin of the lime, some deep and continuous, others broken into short strokes that cross at irregular angles, like a handwriting pressed into the wet. The marks gather into a denser knot towards one side of the field, then thin outwards, letting the smooth, trowelled ground breathe between one stroke and the next.
The palette stays within the natural range of aged lime: warm ivory and bone white, soft greige and pale ochre where the trowel has burnished more deeply, with traces of earth and terracotta emerging at the bottom of every scratch, there where the raw lime is uncovered. Close up, every incision tells of the pressure of the hand that traced it, the fine ridge of mortar pushed to the edges of the groove.
In this gesture I find a lesson in time: the surface does not hide the moment in which it was born, it keeps it. It is the trace of a decision taken in a few seconds, before the material set forever.
