Specchio di Bisanzio

The Specchio di Bisanzio wallpaper comes from an idea as old as stone itself: to face the wall not with an image but with an architecture. The design shows a facing of large rectangular marble slabs, book-matched so that the veining runs on across a central seam, set in a regular grid and separated by fine moulded stone frames that weave a continuous orthogonal lattice. A smooth plinth band runs along the base, and a slender cyma closes the composition above: a framed, symmetrical register that rises in even rows without a break from one edge to the other.

It is the Byzantine style, that of the basilicas and baptisteries, that guides the palette: grey-white veined with ochre and pink, breaks of verde antico, a register of porphyry red underlining the frames — all held in a single tonal key, so the wall reads as one surface of living stone. Close up, the marble breaks into dense crystalline veining, into mitred joints barely perceptible at each corner of the mouldings, into the finely chiselled relief of the profiles.

I like to think of this design as a threshold: whoever passes beneath it crosses into a time when stone was sacred language, measure and symmetry.
