Trifore di Pietraviva

This is how the Trifore di Pietraviva wallpaper is born: from the steady light crossing a sequence of windows carved in stone, as if time had stopped before an intact medieval wall. It is the Gothic style, here, that sets the rhythm — two- and three-light windows aligned along a continuous wall, each opening divided by slender colonnettes with carved capitals, crowned by trefoil arches whose cusps meet in sharp points. The two types alternate in a measured procession, and at the centre a wider three-light window becomes the pivot of the whole composition, as in the great façades that can be looked at from afar and read close to.

I wanted every detail to speak of the true material: the warm limestone and travertine, the grey shadow slipping into the niches, the worn ochre of sills and jambs, the mossy patina surfacing beneath the string course. This is not decoration, it is architecture fixed to the wall — the grain of the chisel, the small erosions of the surface, the patience of those who worked the stone blow after blow.
