Velatura di Ponente

I conceived the VELATURA DI PONENTE wallpaper as the moment when a raw cloth still holds the damp of a dye just laid on by hand. It belongs to the family of natural materials and speaks of linen, the fibre that knows no perfect line but only the gesture crossing it, band after band, letting the colour spread where it will. Here the surface is not printed: it is dyed, like a cloth hung to dry in the late afternoon sun. The vertical stripes come out narrow or wide according to the rhythm of the hand, the edges never close into a sharp outline but blur into one another in a watery breath. Burnt terracotta, dusty blue and cream alternate without repeating, each band carrying a minimal variation of tone that no machine could programme. The grain of the linen runs across the whole surface, fine and constant, like the weave that holds a memory together. It is not a motif that imitates fabric: it is the fabric itself, photographed in its most authentic imperfection, to render its texture, its chromatic breath, the warm delicacy of someone who has chosen not to hide the hand behind the drawing.
