Velo di Calce

The Velo di Calce wallpaper comes from the ancient gesture of the trowel, from the moment when Venetian plaster settles on the wall and holds the movement of the hand for ever. It depicts nothing: the material itself becomes the subject, in an enveloping field of lime and travertine where raking light discovers grain, a faint glaze and a barely perceptible relief.

We looked for the tactile truth of Mediterranean surfaces aged by the sun: clay, sand and gypsum, travertine cream, a breath of lime grey-green and oxidised bronze in the deepest folds. Tone on tone, with nothing to distract, so that silence does the speaking. It is a wall that breathes, made for the bedroom: in the warm half-light of evening the soft shadows gather and the room becomes gathered, intimate, quiet.

From a distance the Velo di Calce wallpaper is a continuous, even breath; up close it reveals the bloom of the lime, the small dusty imperfection, the diagonal sweep crossing the wall like a thought. It is WallZad’s philosophy: beauty that does not shout, but lets itself be touched with the eye.
