Zebrature d’Ebano

I am the Zebrature d’Ebano wallpaper, and I am born of a single gesture of nature: the curve of an okapi’s flank, where the velvety chocolate-coloured coat lights up with ivory-white bands, as crisp as a sudden thought. I do not tell of the whole animal, but of its most eloquent fragment — the haunch, the hindquarter, the muscle dissolving into shadow at the edges of the skin. It is in this detail, almost cartographic, that my beauty hides: a rhythm that pulses, thins and bends following the roundness of the body, never identical to itself.

Material is my language. Every band carries the fine grain of the hair, the thread of light grazing its edge, the slight irregularity where the pale meets the dark — nothing is as crisp as a drawing, everything is as alive as a body. The almost black brown of the folds and the warm ivory of the striping do not shout the contrast: they keep it, with the discretion of one who knows that true elegance needs no clamour.

That is why I feel at home in the entrance of a hotel, in the lobby that welcomes without ever startling with excess — where the light is warm, the spaces wide, and luxury is measured in well-inhabited silences. Whoever looks at me from a distance takes in a broad, confident motif; whoever comes closer discovers a world of detail, as happens to those who truly know how to look. In this double distance my whole nature lives, rendered faithfully, without artifice.
